Nobody likes to have a smelly kitchen. Has ever happened to you when you cleaned your whole kitchen, trying to eliminate the odor, only to find that the smell comes from kitchen sink drain? It is a frustrating fact, but it can be treated quite easily.

You need:
– baking soda
– lemon juice, vinegar or bleach
– corrosive pipe cleaner

1. Remove debris from the sink drain. Use the garbage disposal, if you have one. If not, take the waste manually, if you can reach it. You may have to remove the sink trap (the U-shaped pipe under the sink) to remove substances trapped in the tube.

2. Let the hot water run down the drain. This will kill the bacteria that may be living in the drain. Depending on the water temperature in your house, you may have to boil water and pour it in the sink to remove bacteria. Be careful not to burn yourself with the metal parts of the pool, which retain heat from the water.

3. Drop a teaspoon of baking soda down the drain. Continue to run hot water during this process. Baking soda is useful to kill odors.

4. Pour vinegar, bleach or lemon juice down the drain if the baking soda and hot water doesn’t do the work. Be sure to ventilate the room and wear old clothes if you use bleach. Let the cleaning solution stand for 15 minutes, then pour hot water again and see if the odor persists.

5. Purchase corrosive pipe cleaner, as Drain-o Bio-Clean Bac-Out if you still have odor problems. These products can be purchased at any grocery store or home supply. Carefully follow the instructions for your safety.
